The Great Depression may be, in my opinion, one of the most important events in our nation's history.
I believe that the depression should be taken as both a lesson and warning to future generations.
I think that it is important to be wise with your money. Being a consumer is a vital part of keeping an economy healthy, but being stupid with your money, such as unwise purchase of stocks and buying things that you can't really afford, is what causes debt and huge issues with the economy.
I believe that the economy follows a natural course of ups and downs. I also believe, however, that the government has a responsibility to the people and to itself to make sure that the economy doesn't go too much off its path. Like parents with a child, the government should monitor the economy, but only really take control when things get very bad. If a quarter of your population is unemployed, or hundreds of thousands of people are living in homelessness, the government has an obligation to change something.
FDR's approach was exactly what the country needed at the time. However, presidents shouldn't necessarily always follow his lead. If the situation calls for serious action, I believe it should be taken. If it doesn't, then let the economy follow its own path.
